Balancing EQ and IQ

We have lived in an era where we used to judge people by their IQ. But, those basic IQ tests designed to measure your math skills aren’t the only cornerstone anymore. According to research IQ accounts for only 20% of a person’s success. Rest there can be multiple factors behind it.

Mankind has 2 parts in the brain– A Rational mind and an Emotional mind. It is very important to have a balance of both. If the emotional mind is not in control, one may end up making irrational and bad decisions that can adversely affect his own self and whoever he is associated with.

As per the psychologist Howard Gardner, Intelligence is not a single general ability. and providentially there are multiple intelligences and people may possess strengths in numerous such areas.

Corporates too nowadays have been focusing more on the EQ rather than IQ and here’s why….

  • People with good EI (Emotional Intelligence) can handle work pressure positively
  • They are more co-operative and good team workers
  • Not to miss they are pretty good listeners
  • They are more empath
  • They can be good role models
  • Decisions they make are more cautious and discrete

It has been rightly said that “Your IQ can land you a job, but your lack of EQ can get you fired.” You cannot maintain healthy relations with others unless you have good control over your emotions. Unless you are constructively communicating your feelings and on the same page understanding others as well. Poor EQ can lead to crime and other unethical behavior which can be vulnerable not only to corporates but the whole society.

Balancing EQ and IQ may be difficult but, not impossible! Developing EQ is easier than developing IQ.

How to develop EQ?

  • Learn to understand your emotions and behaviors.
  • You can have a SWOT Analysis. This helps you to understand your strengths, your weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. You can understand others only if you first know your own self.
  • Lean self-emotional control.
  • Learn to motivate others.
  • Develop empathy.
